Bob Chapek was born in 1960 in the suburbs of Chicago to a working mother and father, Marie (Lofay) and Bernard W. Chapek. He grew up in Hammond, Indiana. His father had served in World War II. His family visited Walt Disney World every year.

Chapek graduated from George Rogers Clark Jr./Sr. High School in 1977. He has a Bachelor of Science in microbiology from Indiana University Bloomington and a Master of Business Administration from Michigan State University. Before joining The Walt Disney Company in 1993, he worked in brand management for the H. J. Heinz Company and advertising for J. Walter Thompson.

Career at Disney

Home Entertainment

Bob ChapekChapek began his Disney career in 1993 as the marketing director for the company’s Buena Vista Home Entertainment division, which was focused on VHS tapes then. Michael Eisner, CEO at the time, said of Chapek: “He was always an executive that you knew would be on the rise… He was skilled at expanding the company while reacting to the competitive environment. By emphasizing the release of content on DVD and, eventually, Blu-ray discs, Chapek is credited for bringing Disney’s home entertainment division into the digital era. He received a promotion in 2006 and now leads Buena Vista Home Entertainment. He was named the Walt Disney Studios’ president of distribution in 2009. Since he started his rise to the top of the Walt Disney Company from its home video business, Chapek has been referred to as “the home entertainment industry’s single biggest success story.”

Consumer Products

In September 2011, Chapek was chosen to lead Disney Consumer Products. Following Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, Chapek incorporated Star Wars products into its licensing program, making it the largest intellectual property licensor in the world. In 2013, he was able to clinch a deal with Hasbro in which the toy company agreed to pay Disney up to $225 million for the rights to upcoming Star Wars items and pay Disney $80 million in royalties to prolong the license for Marvel toys.

Parks and Resorts

In February 2015, Chapek was named chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, succeeding Tom Staggs, who became the chief operating officer of The Walt Disney Company. Chapek oversaw the opening of Shanghai Disneyland Park in China in 2016, the largest foreign investment project in China’s history. He also led the expansion of Star Wars-themed lands at Disneyland Park in California. Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida, which opened in 2019 as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. He also initiated the development of Avengers Campus, a Marvel-themed land at Disney California Adventure Park that opened in 2021.

CEO of The Walt Disney Company

On February 25, 2020, Chapek was announced as the CEO of The Walt Disney Company, succeeding Bob Iger, who became executive chairman until December 31, 2021. Chapek became the seventh CEO in the company’s history and the first without a creative background. He faced several challenges as CEO, such as dealing with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Disney’s businesses, especially its theme parks and movie studios; managing the growth of Disney+, which surpassed 100 million subscribers in March 2021; and navigating the tensions between theatrical and streaming releases of films.

Chapek had a controversial tenure as CEO, as he faced criticism from some employees, fans, investors, and media outlets for his perceived lack of vision, charisma, and leadership skills; his focus on cost-cutting and efficiency; his clashes with creative talent and executives; and his handling of diversity and inclusion issues. Chapek was dismissed from the position on November 20, 2022. Then succeeded by his predecessor, Bob Iger, who returned as CEO until a new successor was found.

Personal Life

Chapek has been married to his wife, Cynthia Ford, since 1980. They have three children: Kyle, Christopher, and Courtney. He lives in Los Angeles, California. He stands at 5 feet 9 inches (1.75 m). Chapek enjoys the Chicago Cubs baseball and Indiana Hoosiers basketball teams. He is also an avid collector of Disney memorabilia and art.
